Overview
For Phil the most important value in life is music. This means that he always finds a connection with music, no matter what he does or where he is. As a DJ, Phil started spinning his favourite 45’s at school parties back in 1979. Ongoing into the eighties he runned a pirate radio station and moving on into the nineties he opened his own CD-store (the smallest in the country!). Phil founded the name Wicked Jazz Sounds for his local radio show in 1998 and was established since 2002 as a company with business partner Manne van der Zee. With a collective of DJs and talented musicians, Wicked Jazz Sounds is best known for its weekly Sunday club night at the Melkweg Amsterdam. They released seven CD compilations, performed on several major festivals in the Netherlands and started organizing their own annual festival since 2015. Being a radio host for the WJS show on Arrow Jazz FM (2008), KX Radio (2009-2010) and Dutch national Radio 6 Soul & Jazz (2010-2013), the show now runs every four weeks on Red Light Radio. From 2010-2016 Phil was one of the curators for the Funk/Jazz page on 22tracks and since 2018 active again with the weekly updated ‘Tip44 Funk Soul Jazz & more’ playlist on Spotify. As of January the 1st, 2019 Phil makes a weekly podcast on NPO Soul & Jazz. One thing you can’t accuse Phil of is musical segregation; his DJ sets reflect his eclectic upbringing, including everything from jazz, funk, soul, hiphop, house, latin and even drum & bass, electronic, beats and beyond.
